About TUBITAK 1702 Patent-Based Technology Transfer Support Program
The "TUBITAK 1702 Patent-Based Technology Transfer Support Program" facilitates the transfer of patented technologies developed in universities, research institutions, and technology development zones to industry. The program provides a grant of up to 75% of the amount spent by the customer organization that obtains a patent license or transfer, to reimburse the patent license or transfer fee.
Prof. Dr. Gülşen ALTUĞ (Istanbul University – Biyotek15)
Patent-Based Technology Transfer Story
Professor Dr. Gülşen Altuğ is a faculty member at Istanbul University, Faculty of Fisheries, where she isolates marine bacteria to obtain compounds that can be used as fertilizers (agricultural composition), cleaning products (instead of chemical cleaners), and compounds that break down hydrocarbons in soil. As a result of this work, Istanbul University currently holds six patent applications under the Turkish Industrial Property Law No. 6769. Additionally, since 2015, Prof. Altuğ has been a founder of Biyotek15, a company located at the Entertech Istanbul Technopark. In order to transform three of the patents that Istanbul University holds into commercial products, a license aggrement was signed between Istanbul University and Biyotek15 on June 2nd, 2022, which included the licensing of these patents to Biyotek15. Based on this memorandum of understanding, an application was made to the TUBITAK 1702 Patent-Based Technology Transfer Support Program, and the project was deemed eligible for support.
During the commercialization of the patented technologies, Biyotek15 has collaborated with Turanlar Waste Management Inc. to start testing for the Kuwait soil decontamination project (with a budget of 14 billion USD) supported by the United Nations. In addition, a collaboration has been established with Hayat Kimya in the field of cleaning products. The company produces and markets its own marine bacteria-based fertilizer compositions.
Thus, a cycle of knowledge transfer and revenue sharing has been established from academia to academic start-ups, from academic start-ups to the market, from the market to academic entrepreneurship, and from academic entrepreneurship back to the university.
Seda ÇAKIR (Biyopol)
Patent-Based Commercialization Adventure
Seda Çakır, a biologist, founded Biyopol company within the Entertech Istanbul Technopark in 2015. She obtains chitosan from marine crustaceans. Her company has filed patent applications for the chitosan extraction method, chitosan-based cosmetic products, chitosan-based packaging, and textiles treated with chitosan. Particularly in the textile sector, Biyopol has initiated trial collaborations with BOSSA Ticaret ve Sanayi İşletmeleri T.A.Ş. to apply chitosan to denim fabrics to make them antibacterial and improve their color performance. If the trial results meet expectations, a patent-based technology transfer is intended to take place. Biyopol aims to use the revenue generated from this to produce luxury segment cosmetic products and target domestic and international sales.
